We are at the cusp of a new beginning. As we look hopeful to the new year that beckons us, we cannot ignore the pain, dejection and lessons that this fading year brought us. They say we cannot fill a cup that is already full. And so it made me wonder, what does it mean to empty one’s cup or what they also term RELEASE?

Does release mean trying to forget our past or does it mean allowing the memory to float away while holding onto the lesson learnt?

When we cling to memories, we are often accompanied by emotions and feelings associated with these memories. What follows next is a rollercoaster ride which like a whirlpool begins to drag us inside the drama of what should’ve and what could’ve. There is only regret that stays back.

But when we hold onto the lessons learnt from a difficult situation, all we have left in our hearts is GRATITUDE. Gratitude for teaching us patience, resilience or a part of us we never thought existed. It opens doors for healing, doors to mend relationships, door to a path that leads to living a fulfilled life.

To me RELEASE is unburdening. The regrets and resentments are a heavy burden we carry within our hearts. As we release these feelings and emotions that no longer serve us, we make room for growth. We move towards HOPE and HEALING.

And how do we RELEASE? We just make an intention and hold an open space in awareness of all the feelings and emotions we hold within us. The healing journey has a funny way of working. All it asks from us is to live our lives with Awareness. We all struggle with our kleshas. They bring obstacles or antarayas on our path. But we don’t need to fight or detest them. Pratipasha bhavana does not ask us to push our emotions under the rug and just be positive, but rather in svadhyaya we allow these antarayas to trip our egoes so that we fall from our headspace to heartspace and allow pratipaksha bhavana to unfold naturally. It’s only when we let our inner stories come out, we create an opportunity for transformation.

And so my dear readers, as we prepare to step into the new year, may we all release the anxiety, sadness and despair from the year that is slowly slipping by. Offering nothing but gratitude, let us all move ahead, holding each other’s hand into the New Year filled with HEALING!!
